The Most Important Things to Know About Search Engine Optimization

In-bound Links or Backlinks

Links that send a user to your site.  It is important these links are "relative" links.  Meaning the content pertains to your content.  Relative content on the originating site ensures it's considered a quality link.  Links that have more relevance are more important to search engines, ie. google, yahoo, aol and msn.

Twitter and Facebook can assist us with Backlinks.  By setting up an account on Twitter and Facebook, adding relative content about your business and your "main" website, then linking to your website from Twitter and Facebook, you've created good Backlinks.

Reciprical Links

The next step is to then add links on your website to Facebook and Twitter, thus creating quality Reciprical Links.  We've all seen this on one website or another, "Tweet With Us" or "Follow Us on Facebook" are two examples.

Aside from our linking endeavors we must also consider the "Meta" within our webpages.  Meta is the tags that are included in your webpages for the search engines to see and read.  The most important meta tags to use are: <title>, <description> and <keywords>.  It is also very important each page on your website focuses your content as well as your keywords to your topic.  Your title and description tags should contain your focused keywords.

Finding the Right Keywords

We recommend Google Webmaster Tools .  This is a free service provided by Google.  With this you can type in keywords you are interested in using in your site and see how many other people used those keywords when they performed a search.  Your goal is to seek out the most "targeted" keywords.  In our example at our seminar we chose "wine".  Now a general search for wine results in millions of results.  That's no good.  If our site were new we could never compete with these results.  We must find more "targeted" "niche" keywords to use.  To take this a step further, imagine we are a winery in Lexington Virginia.  Now we can "target".  When we adjust our keywords to say, "winery lexington virginia", our results are more finely tuned and we get more relevant results.  Those are the keywords we would then "target" and include throughout our pages, in our meta tags and in our page names.
Naming Your Webpages

Keyword rich webpage names also aid in search engine optimization.

For example:  a) auto-repair-buena-vista.html will get you found more quickly than b) page3.html.

So where do we put all these keywords once we've figured out which ones we should use?

In your:

    * Domain Name
    * <title> meta tag
    * <description> meta tag
    * <keywords> meta tag
    * <h1> <h2> and <h3> header tags
    * Content

By carefully placing our keywords in these positions on our pages we can very simply have our main keywords show the necessary eight times and the secondary keywords show at least four times.
